A UK SME with technical expertise in developing real-time mission-critical software for industrial applications has developed a scalable, high-security, multi-user, multi-threaded mobile software framework with multiple sensors and data authenticity. Data is encrypted, securely shared and seamlessly synchronized between clients and cloud. The technology offers a highly responsive experience regardless of communication interruptions. In November 2016 the company won a UK government ‘First-of-a-Kind' national technology innovation competition for embedding this software framework in Health and Well-being mobile application. In standalone mode (single user) the app lets a person organize and maintain their daily routines, incl. for health self-care, well-being and independence, increase social interactions (going out, phone calls and web access), and measure and promote physical activity. In multi-user mode a group of people can more effectively care for and support a vulnerable person. It allows a trusted person or group to see another person's ‘Live Story', i.e. if they are maintaining their daily routines and independence, e.g. is a person mobile, how frequently they leave their home, are they doing enough physical activity, are they socially interacting, and how they are feeling and do they have unmet care needs. This allows for early identification of well-being concerns. The software is designed and developed entirely in-house. To date a major cause for health and well-being software technologies being largely unsuccessful is that they are not being used sustainably by elderly. The challenge is to provide more immersive, interesting and valuable experience to older adult users by using the software not just in a mobile app but also integrating it in their environment.Therefore the company is looking to offer a license agreement to companies developing cloud, wearables and smart home technologies for elderly wellbeing that could integrate its software in their products.

Advantages and innovations

The software is designed to overcome the barriers experienced by older adults, such as: (1) the insufficient technology skills to setup and use a stand-alone app; (2) reluctance to use a mobile phone; (3) doubts about technology usefulness (older adults must perceive a technology is useful and valuable for them to want to use it daily). The software can be connected to various sensors (e.g. for battery charge or accelerometer motion sensors) for remote monitoring and automated emergency alert.
