Eurostars: SME coordinator with expertise in sleep medical devices and/or mobile application development sought
A Swiss university together with a Swiss sleep centre is preparing a Eurostars proposal. The aim is to develop a smart platform to assess, monitor and promote a good sleep hygiene. Particular attention is on people suffering from insomnia or other sleep disorders. An R&D performing SME project coordinator already involved in the EU medical market is sought for a research cooperation. The coordinator should have the capacity and be interested to commercialize the technology.
Partner expertise sought
The specific area of activity of the partner: The Swiss consortium is looking for partners active in the medical devices, sensors, mobile sensor device area. To create an eligible consortium the partner should be an R&D-performing SME according to Eurostars guidelines (https://www.eurostars-eureka.eu/downloads/guidelines). The tasks to be performed by the partners sought are the development of a solid business model, with attentions to the requirements for certification and commercialization needs.
The objective of the project is to develop methodologies, software and new devices to collect, store and share data about sleep and general activity. The project aims at interfacing electroencephalography (EEG), electrooculography (EOG), and electromyography (EMG) data collected in a home based environment gathering data about sleep architecture that could be shared with the physician or used as a biofeedback for the user. Many people are not keen to fill in sleep diaries and to collect automatically the information can be seen as a plus. Furthermore, insomnia, as well as other disorders, can be treated with biofeedback. An advanced version of the devices could be used by sleep physician to gather important information and to save the cost and discomfort of a full polysomnography (PSG). The Swiss university and the sleep centre have already gained expertise in a similar project. Their expertise already includes: - Statistical data analysis. - Bio-signal processing & pattern recognition. - Machine learning / data mining applied to sleep. - Automated and semi-automated sleep scoring - Transdisciplinary projects The Swiss consortium is seeking an SME coordinator with the legal form of an SME (R&D performing SME according to Eurostars guidelines) with interest in sleep medicine devices and experience in the EU medical devices or therapeutic markets. The company should be able to exploit the toolkit commercially. The SME must have experiences or high interests in the medical health areas. A relevant expertise might be in the field of mobile sensor. The SME partner requires expertise in medical/therapeutic device standardization. The project duration will be 36 months. The project will be conducted in two stages. 1. Development of the specific prototype 2. Pilot study implementation Together with the prototype, an ICT platform will be developed to collect and analyse data and to share the collected data remotely. The partners for a research cooperation agreement should come from Eurostars member countries. Eurostars supports international innovative projects led by R&D-performing SMEs. The Eurostars call deadline is 28 February 2019. The deadline for expressions of interests is 25 January 2019.
Advantages and innovations
Benefit and Advantages: - The development of this device, with the guide of sleep experts, will be exploited both by sleep physician and by any person with sleep disorders. - The exploitation of existing expertise. - The acquired know-how in the complex research area will allow the participants to develop a new system for possible future applications in other areas. Innovations: - Many mobile-based apps are already available, but none is a complete device and really answer the physician needs. - The information collected could improve self-treatment and the recognition of defined disorders and diseases. - The project will offer an innovative and flexible platform, compatible with smartphones. - A strong multidisciplinary approach.
