A Czech technical university developed the technical design solution for cooling disk brakes. Developed solution has a higher efficiency for cooling the disk brakes and the entire brake system (callipers, pads, disks). The university is looking for manufacturers of brake components from automotive, aerospace and machinery industry and offers manufacturing and licence agreement.

Unlike the classic disk brake systems, new brake solution is cooled exponentially with increasing speed and heat dissipation from the brakes is more intense. Also significant are further positive effects on the vehicle and brake system. The application area of the invention is not limited to transport but also machine parts where it is efficient braking is necessary. The biggest potential of a new brake system in application on high-speed machines that require efficient braking. For this reason, the most suitable application of the invention seems to be fast cars – sports and super sports, but also passenger and cargo transport. The system can be used in automotive industry, aviation industry, engineering industry. The prototype of the system is available for demonstration. The university is ready to offer manufacturing or licence agreement to manufacturing companies from automotive, aerospace or machinery industry.

Advantages and innovations

The transversely drilled ventilated brake disk as compared with conventional brake cooling systems is wrapped in a brake diffuser which is rotated by the kinetic energy of the air at the outlet of the outer circumference of the brake disk thus pressurizing the diffuser, resulting in further passage of air through the disk in the axial direction. This feeds up to 2x more air to the brakes and the heat dissipation from the brakes is more intensive and stable. It is essential to mention that the cooling effect comes only at high brake disk rotation speed. Other advantages of the solution: • It forms a brake disc wrapper and protects it from dust, water, salt and other abrasive particles. • It ensures a stable braking coefficient (more stable estimate of braking force). • It protects the disc from temperature peaks (elimination of the risk of brake disk destruction and deformation due to high temperatures). • The brake diffuser as compared with brake pipes does not affect the aerodynamics of the vehicle - due to its position inside the wheel (lower fuel consumption). • It substantially reduces the temperature of the callipers, brake disks and pads, • It reduces brake wear. • It increases the reliability of the brake system (elongates the service life of the brake system). • It reduces the emission of abrasive particles toxic gases (ecology). • It reduces the emission of abrasive particles toxic gases (ecology).
