A German SME in cooperation with research institutions has developed a remote sensing-based surveying system for biomass based on information from the satellite-borne sensors of the Copernicus Sentinel. It can monitor hedges, shore stripes and road greening in a given area and derive the respective biomass potential in quality and quantity. The given objects often have a width of less than 10 meters. The system is based on linear structures, a precise division into lots and respective calculations. It differentiates between woody and herbaceous biomass and calculates the respective substrate volume and its energy content. Spectral mixing is used as an evaluation method which allows for the precise measuring of area segments in the sub-pixel range. Beneficiaries of the technology can use the data as a basis for economic profitability calculations and investment estimates, management strategies for biomass plants or location decisions in spatial planning. Landscape managers can use the technology to exploit areas hitherto unused or to optimize existing biomass strategies or harvesting logistics.
