Self-tonometer for contactless measurement of the intraocular pressure
A research institute from North Germany developed a contactless tonometer to measure the intraocular pressure (IOP) reliably and with high precision, without injuring the cornea. Patients can even carry out the measurement themselves, by using this self-tonometer. The client is looking for technical cooperation or research and development agreements to further develop this medical device. A subsequent license agreement is intended.
The required partner is either a manufacturer of medical devices in the field of eye-exam or a company selling medical devices. If possible, further development can be done within a publicly funded project.
An increased intraocular pressure (IOP) is the most common risk factor for glaucoma. For purposes of diagnostics and monitoring of the disease, ophthalmologists usually measure and follow-up on the development of IOP by applying tonometry. As the pressure varies in the course of the day, a reliable measurement requires recording a circadian pressure profile. As yet, this can only be done in a hospital. Now a research institute at a university in North Germany developed a contactless tonometer to measure reliably the IOP with high precision, without any harm to the cornea. The measurement technique has already been explored in great detail and analyzed in comprehensive tests on porcine and human eyes. The fundamental suitability of the measurement method for patients has thus been confirmed. The appliance is positioned like an airtight measurement chamber around the eye, to which it emits a pressure wave. This results in a brief deformation of the eyeball, the manifestation of which permits the determination of the IOP. Patients are able to carry out the measurement themselves, by using this invention. The client wants to bring this medical device to marketability under a technical cooperation agreement and is also open for a research and development agreement for further development of the device. A subsequent license agreement is intended once it is ready to enter the market. Following the present developing project, a clinical trial phase will be the next step.
Advantages and innovations
As opposed to most tonometers, this contactless tonometer does not require any local anesthesia. The contactless measurement also prevents the risk of transmitting pathogens. Prolonged measurement series, as well as IOP circadian profile measurements, are possible outside the hospital. Patients are able to carry out the measurement independently in their customary surroundings. The self-tonometer can also be applied for supine measurements.
