A Catalan Research Center patented a new fluorescent nanostructure with superior stability and remarkable optical properties based on a nanovesicle bearing fluorescent organic dyes, irrespective of their physico-chemical and optical properties. Fluorescent organic dyes are widely investigated as fluorescent probes in microscopy, thanks to their tunable optical and physicochemical properties via chemical modification of their structure.Good fluorescent probes for microscopy should be bright and highly photostable; water soluble; and chemically stable in buffers, cell media, or body fluids; as well as capable of site-specific labeling and showing biocompatibility. Delivery of hydrophobic materials in biological systems, for example contrast agents or drugs, is an obdurate challenge, severely restricting the use of materials with otherwise advantageous properties. Loading an organic dye into a nonfluorescent nanocarrier, arranged as fluorescent organic nanoparticle offers an interesting strategy to bring organic dyes in aqueous media, since the obtained nanovesilces have good brightness, photostability, and biocompatibility These fluorescent nanovesicles patented by the Catlan Research Center have been proved as efficient probes for in vivo and in vitro imaging and have potential applications in imaging, theranostic and medical applications. The fluorescent nanovesicles can interact with the hydrophobic or the hydrophilic region of the bilayer. The preparation of the fluorescent nanovesicles offers a great potential for the development of multifunctional nanovesicles integrating for example drugs, peptides and imaging agents. Moreover, the fluorescent nanovesicles can incorporate simultaneously several dyes, obtaining probes for more complex applications, such as multicolor imaging. This platform is especially effective for the conveyance of non-water-soluble dyes whose optical properties are usually not stable in physiological media, but remain efficient after incorporation in nanovesicles. The obtained nanovesicles, prepared by a CO2-based technology,show excellent colloidal- and photostability, outperforming other nanoformulations of the dyes, and improve the optical properties of the fluorophores in water. Therefore, these fluorescent nanovesicles constitute an appealing nanomaterial for bioimaging applications. The partner sought would be an Industrial company developing diagnostic tools and contrast agents interested to collaborate through a licence agreement to use this technology and bring the product to the market.
