Organic derivatives for the manufacture of electronic devices
A Spanish research institution has developed organic derivatives, low cost, with possibility of modifying its molecular structure, including different substitutions, improving the properties of electronic semiconductor. These molecules present not only interesting electronic properties which make them active for the manufacture of solar cells, specifically organic photovoltaic cells, but also an intense blue color witch allows it so be used as a dye in the textile industry.
Industrial partners from the energy, electronic and textile are being sought to collaborate through a patent licence agreement. The partner role will be: (i) produce the product and, (ii) commercialize the product.
Organic semiconductor materials The demand for energy is increasing solar energy is the future. Organic photovoltaic cells (obtain electricity from solar radiation) are the alternative to replace convencional inorganic materials, such us, silicon. Organic derivatives provide flexible mechanic, low cost and molecular design. They offer the possibility to modulate the properties (luminescence, absorption and transport of charge) as a semiconductor by adding substitutions in the chemical syntheis. They are organic derivatives of 7,7'-diazaindigo (Figure 1), where an alquilica chain have been incorporated in the nitrogen position witch make them soluble in polar organic solvents. On the other hand, the 7,7'-diazaindigo molecule is not only import from an electronic point of view but is also novel because of its intense blue color (Figure 2) witch can be modulated based on the substitution of the different substitutions in the nitrogen position. Advantages and innovations
Then main advantages are: 1. The synthesis of the derivatives is simple and the starting materials are cheap, so the manufacturing cost would be low for their manufacture on an industrial scale. 2. The molecule is not only a very stable acceptor within organic semicondutors to be used in the manufacture of organic photovoltaic cells, but can also be incorporated into flexible and moldable area. 3. Regarding their optical properties, the compounds present a strong absorption in the UV-visible region with hight extinction coefficients. 4. On the other hand, die to its intense blue color it could be used as a dye in the textile industry.
