The Greek technical company is working for several years in the agro-food sector. The company has invested a lot of effort to find an effective means for combating the harmful Diptera insects which are destroying a lot of fruits and especially the olives. Diptera insect order comprises a multitude of species with harmful effects on global cultivation, with overall damage estimated at multi-million euros annually. Among the most damaging species are Dacus (Bactrocera Olea), the Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitis Capitata) and Spotted Wing Drosophila (Drosophila Suzukii). The damaging effects of the said insect species to fruit production has resulted to the creation of a vast global market for insecticides, which is heavily dependent on spraying and is expected to grow globally from $13,0 billion in 2013 to $16,4 billion by 2019, at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 4.7% (2014 to 2019). However, the use of insecticides raises substantial concerns on their immediate-to-long term effects to ecosystems, animal species and human health resulting to an increasing market share taken up by environmentally friendly solutions (bio-pesticides). Nevertheless, today the European bio-pesticides sector does not offer any reliable and competitive solution for mitigation of the Diptera insect order. The new innovative technology that the Greek company provides as a key innovator in the European bio-pesticides sector is resulted after extensive experimentation and observations in the field. The Greek company has developed and patented an innovative insect trap for the mitigation of Dacus, an insect that is heavily infecting the olive trees. The solution based on the insect’s trophotropism (the movement of the insect towards the source of nutrition) as well as on its attractiveness to humidity, with the outer color of the trap being an extra feature of attractiveness. The traps are manufactured in polyethylene envelopes enhanced with a contact insecticide (deltamethrin) containing aqueous solution of trophic attractive. This method concerns the attraction of the Diptera insects on the trap surface, which is enhanced with insecticide. The insect absorbs a small amount of active substance via its chemoreceptors and is eliminated a few minutes later. It is worth to mention that the trap exterminates only the harmful insects, not the beneficial ones. The trap is fully compatible with the Regulation 834/07 of the European Union and certified for organic farming. Moreover, it has been proven to be an excellent way for Dacus control, even in years with high populations of the insect, exterminating almost 98-99% of its population. The technology has been patented (Pat. Reg. No: 20090100114) and fully licensed for distribution in Greece, France and Cyprus (Licensing Zone “C – South” according to Annex I of EU Regulation 1107/2009). The technology is also awarded an SME Instrument Phase 1 project. The insect trap protects the olive fruit, berries, citrus fruit, stone fruits, pomegranates, fig and apple-like fruits from the attack of ceratitis capitata, beetles, butterflies and other insects (Rhynchophorus Ferrugineus, Paysandisia Archon, Oryctes species, etc). Its entomologic actions are tested and based on the chemical sensors on the insects’ feet that helps in the absorbance of the active substance, which lead to their extermination. The recommended application is of 15 traps per acre, resulting in killed insects to over 10,000 per day. The company is currently looking companies dealing with pest solutions for a commercial agreement with technical assistance.
