Partnering opportunity

Earth observation system for farmers

Summary

An Italian SME has developed a fast information system that transform Satellite images in valuable information for the farmer for decision support for precision irrigation or pests treatments. The images can be acquired from different sources such as aerial imagery, tractor-mounted sensors, drones, and ground scouting: all play a role in providing agronomists and farmers with valuable and actionable information.

Description

The italian SME innovative platform is developed in a cloud computing and software environment and make possible to build an automated infrastructure to handle terabytes of daily imagery, and deliver this data in near-real time, in easy to-use formats. Moreover, it supports the monitoring of a wide range of variables which affect crops, allowing the farmer to make better-informed decisions in planning, planting and growing the new crops. It makes available four types of different services for crop and agro-fields data management and analysis, integrated with satellite based information into a GIS like environment: • Earth Observation satellite value added services for crop analysis and management, with possible integration of customer's proprietary databases; • Geodatabase of biophysical layers, agricultural land-use management, land parcel reference, crop control and distribution and agricultural thematic maps; • Trend analysis maps such as spatial and temporal variations of agricultural land, crop production monitoring, hydrological stress of vegetation; • Web Decision support tools for the definition and the evaluation of agricultural farm trend. The innovative solution developed belongs to a project started in 2016, Its main goal is to offer an innovative precision-farming service, producing maps derived from Earth observation satellites and, in particular Copernicus Sentinel 2 satellite. The project aims to develop an informative agricultural system that allows even less qualified users to increase their agricultural production. The solution platform develops ‘stressmaps' using automatic normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) extraction. This index is useful in agriculture due to its ability to differentiate ‘stressed' plants from healthy ones. It allows monitoring the vigor of crops to an exceptional detail, capturing their vegetative state and quantifying the photosynthetically active biomass. NDVI values for fields enables farmers to know which areas of their fields need more work and fertilizer. The yellow shades show low biomass while the green high biomass. Another innovation for users is the possibility of downloading these maps into several IT standard formats, ready to be used in different exchange-format applications, without forcing the operator to study other software or buy proprietary systems. With the right information, agronomists and farmers can have a clear, current understanding of what is happening in each individual field at each crop growth stage, enabling them to monitor crop growth dynamics, detect issues early, and take smart, timely actions. The SME is looking for commercial Agreement with technical assistance, licence, financial and joint venture agreement

Advantages and innovations

One of the main needs of farmers, in particular small and medium farmers who account for the 80% of the utilised agricultural area (UAA), is the possibility to increase yields while reducing the costs and environmental impacts (using less water, energy, fertilizers and pesticides) of current crop production processes. Up to now, there are no solutions present in the market addressing such needs. The novelty of the The innovative platform solution is based on two main pillars: • Better yield and quality forecast, images at the beginning and at the end of the growing season • Irrigation management, more images in spring and summer • New services for crops with smaller extent (potatoes, sunflower, linen, …) • Intermediate crops nitrogen uptake • Forages monitoring • Water irrigation management
