High power fuel cell for portable and mobility application
A Singapore institute of higher learning and research has developed novel fuel cells powered by hydrogen that have 2-3 times higher energy density compared to conventional energy storage devices, such as lithium ion batteries. The fuel cells can be utilized in a broad range of applications, including flight, personal mobility, portable off-grid power etc. This technology is available for licensing. The institute seeks licensing or research partnerships with SMEs of any size or MNEs.
The Singapore institute is ready to licence the technology with stakeholders from SMEs of all sizes and MNEs in the flight, mobility and portable off-grid power market. The novel hydrogen fuel cell will be of particular interest to stakeholders in the drone technology market as it extends the runtime of drones to hour-long duration. This extended runtime will allow users to operate drones even for industrial applications (for instance, oil rig inspection). The roles of the partner in the desired types of partnerships are as follows: o Licensing Agreement - the Singapore institute can provide technical assistance in offering the technology transfer to the partner for the enhancement of applications or development of new products/applications. o Research Cooperation Agreement - The partner can undertake joint development with the Singapore institute to offer to introduce new products/applications to targeted markets/segments.
Fuel cells produce electricity from a number of domestic fuels, including hydrogen and renewables. Owing to its lightweight feature, hydrogen is a promising candidate for utilization in fuel cells to enable long endurance for weight-sensitive applications. The Singapore institute, which has been pioneering technology development efforts in various industrial clusters, has developed an innovative hydrogen fuel cell technology that extends the application range of conventional fuel cell systems. The novel hydrogen-powered fuel cells are lightweight and compact power sources with specific power of 1.2 kW/kg for a 0.3 kW system and 1.6 kW/kg for systems up to 5kW. The hydrogen fuel cells are available in two types, namely fuel cell stacks ‘as is' and fully integrated plug-and-play fuel cell modules (black start capable). The technology provider can provide customized designs based on the requirements of users on parameters, such as fuel cell design, manufacturing process, control, and integration. Potential applications of the hydrogen fuel cell technology include the following: - Drones – Fuel cells have gained importance in recent years for applications in unmanned aerial vehicles/drones. The novel hydrogen cell technology offers fuel cells that enable 8-fold weight reduction and tripled flight times compared to conventional fuel cells. Through extended flight times from minutes to hours, the hydrogen fuel cell technology is capable of catering to drones that can be deployed in various industrial applications, such as inspection, security, and surveillance. - Personal Mobility Devices (PMDs) – The novel hydrogen fuel cell technology allows extended run-time and range in mobility applications in centralized areas, such as ports, airports, and large warehouses. This eliminates the need for frequent replacement of batteries and reduces associated charging risks. - Portable off-grid power – The compact, low-weight hydrogen fuel cell system enables the application of fuel cells for off-grid applications, including soldier-portable power for up to 72 hours in military applications. The Singapore institute is keen on the following types of partnerships with SMEs of any size or MNEs: o Licensing Agreement - The partner can license the technology to enhance its applications or develop new products/applications through licensing of this technology from the Singapore institute. o Research Cooperation Agreement - The partner can co-develop new products/applications to targeted markets/segments under this mode of partnership with the Singapore institute.
Advantages and innovations
The benefits of the novel fuel cells outweigh those offered by conventional lithium-ion batteries. In comparison with conventional fuel cells, the innovative hydrogen fuel cells offer 6 and 8 times reduced volume and weight respectively and 2-3 X increase in energy density and are capable of rapid refuelling in less than 10 minutes.
