A Ukrainian company specialising in aircraft machine building has designed two types of grinding of ceramic matrix composites for engines. The enterprise is looking for a scientific organization or an engineering company that can produce a full-scale experimental prototype of machine of surface grinding based on either of the methods. The partnership will be held under the technical cooperation agreement.

The enterprise is looking for a scientific organization or an engineering company that can produce a full scale experimental prototype based on one of the methods outlined above. The prototype will be used to test a superset of functions in laboratory environment, with modelling main conditions and interaction with other items; outcomes should comply with statement of works.
The machine-building enterprise in Ukraine was founded in 1945 and since then has been engaged in the development of various engines for aircraft and helicopters. The enterprise deals with blanks out of ceramic matrix composites of two types: – ZrB2-MoSi2 composites; – silicon carbide fiber reinforced composites. For these materials, the enterprise developed two processing methods: 1) Abrasive machining (grinding) is considered as the basic method of surface machining. As the ceramics have a higher hardness and wear resistance, they can be effectively processed with diamond tools only. This method of machining involves the following steps: roughing (removal of about 80% of material), finishing (removal of about 18%), refining with diamond dust (removal of less than 5%). The quality of parts is mainly influenced by kinematic scheme of grinding, cutting speed, bond material of grinding wheel. 2) Electro erosion machining has proved effective. The drawback of this method is that it is used on the conductive ceramics. Machining of dielectric materials requires creating synthetic conductivity of the material. The dielectric blank to be machined, is covered with a thin layer of conductive material. The commencement of the machining initiates interaction between the tool electrode and an auxiliary conductive plate. This results in separation of conductive products from the surface of conductive plate. The presence of conductive products of erosion in the interelectrode gap causes electrical discharge, which knocks micro-portions of dielectric material. The diamond-electrochemical machining is one of the most effective conductive ceramics machining methods. In this case, the diamond cutting tool on conductive bond is used which is connected to the negative pole of power supply, and the machined part is connected to the positive pole. Continuous electrolyte jet is fed to the gap between the machined part and conductive bond of the diamond-cutting tool. When electric current goes through the electrolyte, the surface of machined part is subjected to electrochemical dissolution with formation of anodic film, which can be easily removed by grains of the grinding wheel. The enterprise is looking for a scientific organization or an engineering company that can produce a full-scale experimental prototype of machine of surface grinding based on one of the methods. The client partnership will be held under the technical cooperation agreement. The expected outcome of a technical cooperation would be increased knowledge and improved methods in engines buildings for aircraft. The cooperation could also lead to a discussion about further collaboration for commercialization for new technologies.
